I’m usually not one to make a big deal about a team’s single victory in April. In fact, I usually laugh when I hear people say “This is a MUST win game for this team” when referring to any game prior to July 1st. However, yesterday’s 6-4 Padre victory over the Florida Marlins really forced me to stop, and take notice of what this team has been saying to the baseball world for half a season now.
Your email questions tonight feature the catch to end the game, April being a tough month for closers, rule about pitchers going to their mouth on the mound, importance of Padres base running aggressiveness, and how the weather conditions in Florida tonight may have affected John Garlands pitching.
What is the difference between a breaking ball and curveball, along with bullpen management, line ups, Correia, Gonzo future, and how the experts missed the talents of this team.
It was already going to be difficult for the Padres to justify putting 25% of their overall payroll into one player, even if that player is an offensive powerhouse, gold glove winner, and all around good guy for the community. It may have just become even tougher with yesterday’s announcement of another N.L. first baseman signing a record contract.
HeyScan email questions for 4/20/2010: Answered in this Scan-cast include questions about players falling into foul territory after a catch, Matt Latos’ potential impact later in the year, the thick necklaces players wear, Tony Gwynn’s recent lack of playing time, and the Postgame Player Of The Game candidates.
Does this past week look familiar Padre fans? Late inning victories, come from behind wins, close battles with the Pads finding a way to come out on top, even after setbacks…very similar to what we saw at the end of 2009?
While it may be the come from behind exploits of the Padre batters that gets the most attention during their current winning streak, the unsung heroes have been the Padres’ bullpen corps.
