HeyScan email accusing me of misleading Padre fans

“The Padres are who we think they are” I understand that you want people to be pumped about this team. However, let’s wait and see how this pitching staff does the second or third time they face these teams. We know we can’t hit and that the Dodgers, Giants, D-Backs and Rockies have much better hitting lineups. Sadly the Padres are an injury away from falling to 4th place. Please don’t mislead the viewers.

Sadly this team is nothing to get excited about. The sooner the fans know this, the sooner they can demand a better product. Hopefully you agree that this is NOT a Championship team. I predict a double digit loss tomorrow. Not because I’m a hater, but because I too have watched enough baseball to know that a team is very hard to sweep. – Cesar

Hey Cesar,

No one is promising this is a Championship team. But it seems as though unless their is a guarantee of a championship some people would rather point out all the things this team can’t do, and will bad mouth them.

I’m not promising this team will win a championship. I am saying that in my opinion this is the most exciting team Pad fans have had to watch since I started covering them 7 years ago, that they are winning games (indisputable), that they re doing it through the tried and true foundation pieces of any winning team namely pitching and defense, that they’ve now beaten other teams of all calibers from all divisions and leagues, that they have been doing it since last July, and finally that it is OK for fans to celebrate this and enjoy what this team can do regardless of how they end up.

No one KNOWS what will happen. They could end up in dead last, or winning the division, or somewhere in between, and the same can be said of every other team in the NL west. Of course Dodgers have a better hitting lineup but their starting rotation is weak at best and they are one injury away from having disasterous pitching dilemma. Same for Diamondbacks, whose bullpen is the worst in all MLB. Giants offense is no better than Pads, and their defense is porous. Rockies to me have the most balanced club but are still 4 deep on the DL in important players. EVERY team has issues, but so far the Padres are managing theirs the best, so why not commend them for this instead of finding reasons why they are going to fall apart?

I am not misleading viewers, and I take great offense at your suggestion that I am. I think it is sad that a fan has to be guaranteed that his team will win a championship before he will give them some credit and enjoy for what they have accomplished.

They may get their butts kicked from tomorrow until the end of the season, but at least I have had fun enjoying what they’ve done for the past 5 months (going back to last year), and if they continue their winning ways I’ll get to enjoy that too. I can’t lose. the only ones that lose are those who don’t enjoy their teams accomplishments when they happen, no matter what team, because sports is all about success and failure.

Yes, Cesar, they may lose by triple digits tomorrow, but that doesn’t take away from the fact that they beat the Cardinals this series in two tough games. Just tired of all the negativity every night when these guys are busting their ass and beating people with no excuses. One thing I learned in my 20 years of playing professionally, there are no guarantees in life, and especially in baseball, so enjoy the good times when you have them regardless of what you think may happen down the road.

Thanks for your email, and for watching the show!

    Cesar,

You have a lot of company. I have spent a lot of time online this year and last. I moved to town and found baseball again.. and, unlike all your type, I like watching baseball.

What I don’t like is watching a bunch of egos playing for their stats. I understand why they do it. Now-a-days the basic fan is a fantasy-league-genius but a baseball moron. They don’t care what happens on the field. They just want to see home runs in the paper.

It’s amazing. The team loses 2 games and everyone jumps ship. They claim to be “realistic.” What they are is front-runners that are so uptight that they fear being seen as supporting the local team.

Surely they have their Yankee hats.. Dodger hats.. and if the Padres win a spot in October they’ll buy a Padre hat.. and still tell their co-workers that their wife got the hat and they are wearing to make her feel good.

Now that it’s the All-Star break and we’re in first.. what do you have to say?.. Nevermind .. I know.. we can’t do this or that.. need a bat.. Cory Hart.. yadda yadda..

The sad thing is that you have a chance to see a sports story that is what movies are made of.. and you are missing it.

Grow a pair and got off Scan’s back.

    Cesar,

It’s fans like you that give San Diego fans like me a bad name. You’re nothing shy of fair-weather bro. You should cheer for your team and celebrate what is great about them every chance you get, win or lose, perfect or imperfect. That’s the difference between a fan and a critic. Scan is giving us legit reasons for why we are where we are. Either be proud and accept it or you might want to consider routing for the Yankees.

I like your tact and diplomacy. You do well to consider your employment with Channel 4 when interacting with fans who lack….well, I guess we’ll just call it reason.

I, on the other hand, don’t have a need for diplomacy. Hey Cesar…you are an idiot.
