The Padres did a great job with the opening day ceremonies, and included heros from past decades celebrating 75 years of Padres baseball. Not included was Tony Gwynn, so understandably many Padres fans were wondering where was #19?
Quick answer is that I would assume he was in Long Beach with his San Diego State baseball team. As the head coach of the Aztecs his responsibilities demanded that he be there with his players for their game agains Long Beach State. Although he was not physically present for the opening day events, is there any doubt that his presence was not felt, or that he was not in the thoughts of Padres fans? I’m sure his thoughts were with the Pads as well.
