Padres Calling Up Andy Parrino

Baseball 25 Aug 2011

Corey Brock is reporting/tweeting that the Padres will purchase the contract of San Antonio 2B Andy Parrino, and will send down James Darnell.

Parrino’s home town Rochester Democrat and Chronicle is also reporting the move, saying that the switch hitting 2B was told of the move after Wednesday night’s game.  Parrino is currently batting .303 with the AA Missions, while hitting 9 HR’s, and posting a .388 OBP.  He also spent 48 games early in the year with AAA Tucson hitting .327 with a .399 OBP.

It will be interesting to watch how much playing time Parrino gets, and whether this will be a focused audition for the 2B job next spring.  Orlando Hudson is under contract for 2012, and has been playing some of his best ball of the season in recent weeks, hitting .319 in August, and .306 since the All-Star break.

Also interesting has been the Padres willingness to call up players from AA, bypassing AAA candidates, and making 40-man roster moves which are often avoided by other organizations.  Their commitment to the future is evident.

The little used Darnell will be optioned to Tucson.
