Padres Game Recap – Apr. 27, 2015

sd logoWell, you can’t blame tonight’s 9-4 loss to the Astros on the hitting.  The lineup has been doing a pretty solid job most of the year staying near the top of the leader board in most offensive categories thus far, and came back twice from deficits to tie this game, but ultimately the pitching and defense gave the Astros yet another lead that was just too much to overcome.

Shields and McHugh looked really solid through the first 3 innings, each posting zeros. Shields gave ground first allowing a solo HR to Lowrie on a hanging CH. The next inning it was a combination of missed locations and defense that allowed 2 more to cross.  A dropped ball by Amarista on a steal attempt that would have been an out extended the inning allowing the 2 unearned runs to cross.

As mentioned above, however, the Friars came fighting back scoring 3 in 5th to tie it with the the big hit coming off the bat of Myers for a 2-run double.  He was then driven in by Solarte, all taking place with 2 outs.

With the game tied Maurer came on for the 7th, and surrendered a HR to the first batter he faced to put the Pads into catch up mode once again.  But that’s what this Friar offense is so capable of doing – making  deficits disappear with hard fought at bats and timely hits.  Amarista set the table in the 7th for Solarte (yep, him again!) driving him in with a double to tie it again at 4.

Normally this would be a situation where the Pads would be feeling like they were sitting in the king position. Tie game, late, with one of the most dependable bullpens in baseball coming on to hold the line until the new and improved offense takes care of business. Didn’t work out that way though, as in the 8th Benoit simply did not have anywhere close to his normal overpowering and well placed repertoire.  He was tagged for 3 runs with the help of back to back walks to start the inning followed by single, double, and it was all over.

Mazzoni made his MLB debut for the Pads in the 9th, and was rudely christened with a 2-run HR to put it out of reach 9-4  Not even this offense becoming known for it’s “never say die” persistence could cover that ground, and the Pads suffered their 5th loss in the last 6 games.

Ross wil look to turn things around for the fellas tonight with the first pitch being fired at 7:10.  Look forward to you joining Uncle Teddy and me for the action on the Mighty 1090.

This team has problems with the fundamentals in the field and on the bases and there is no excuse for that at this level. Are the baserunners ignoring their coaches or are the coaches making bad decisions? They can’t afford to give away unearned runs or to waste base runners in scoring position night after night if they expect to make the playoffs.

The bullpen besides Kimbrel is horrible & embarrassing right now! It’s the worst I’ve seen it since the early 90’s! It’s to the point where the other team is looking forward to see our bullpen that’s sad!

People want AJ to go get a SS the hell with that he needs to go look for bullpen help cuz if this bullpen don’t get it together there’s no way we’re making the playoffs. A bullpen is very important! I don’t get it, how did we go from the best bullpen to what we got now. One of the few strengths Black had & I gave him credit for was the Pen, well that’s gone for now.

There’s a possibility we might end this month under 500!!! That’s crazy there’s no way this team should be under 500 entering May, there’s no excuses for that! Right now I main problem is our Bullpen! I’m sorry to say it but it’s playing like garbage right now. Even Jones & the coach said last night besides Kimbrel you can’t really trust anyone. We need to win these next 2 games against the Astros!

This is a big inconsistent problem with the pads, to many inconsistent strategies by bullseye black eye black. If the pads fire this failure Ron Washington or brad mills should coach.

Benoit was of the mindset all Spring that he was the closer, and at the 11th hour that changed. I think he will settle down soon enough.

The first game I’ve turned off early all year. Benoit is definitely not the Benoit of the past…what happened to the trademark of a solid bullpen? And Petco is playing like Yankee stadium lately…so weird.

A lot of talk time has been given to the chemistry in the dugout… does that chemistry extend to the pen? How are the position players and pitchers getting along?

Okay, heres the thing….. a “reliever” Is suppose to come in and get the side out…. so after 1 run scores on the reliever, HE HAS FAILED…!!!…. Pull that guy and put in another.., Youre not suppose to leave him in there to give up 3 stinking lousy runs…BLACKEYE STRIKES AGAIN…. PERIOD..!!!
