Padres Game Recap – May 13, 2013

sd-logoSometimes it’s less about your stuff and more about what you’re made of when standing on an MLB mound. Tonight James Shields showed he had both the stuff and the…well, how should we say it? “Intestinal fortitude”, how’s that to describe in a PG manner certain body parts that only males have? He used everything he had to guide the Padres to a 4-2 victory over the Mariners to earn a series split, and send the fellas home on a Hoffman Happy Flight to end the 10 day trip.

Shields really did have to use the entire repertoire tonight mixing fastballs, curves, sliders, changeups and cutters throughout the night to stay away from the Mariner’s bat barrels through 6 innings. He allowed 1 run on a HR, but had to work out of couple of jams to keep Seattle from doing further damage. He stranded two in the 4th finishing the inning off with two strikeouts. He started to miss his spots a bit in the 5th and allowed the solo HR but limited the damage to that. Then in the 6th he issued back to back walks with the pitch count rising. Buddy gave the veteran the chance to work out of it and he did with punch out, and 6-4-3 double play – juevos!

While Shields was holding the M’s in check, the offense gave him just enough support in the second thanks to a Middlebrooks HR, followed by an Amarista double who scored on a sac-fly by Spangenberg to post a 2-0 lead. It stayed that way until the Mariner HR mentioned above made it 2-1 in the 5th. The Pads finally came up with a couple insurance runs in the 7th and 8th.  Almonte’s 2-out hit in the 7th drove in Venable who pre previously singled.  The 8th inning run was a 100% pure Spangenberg production as he singled, stole second and advanced to third thanks to a pop up slide that allowed him to see the bad throw from the catcher and react to it, and then completed the circuit by scoring on a passed ball that never got more than 10’ away from the catcher. It was a great display of pure hustle to put the Friars up 4-1.

Maurer and Benoit did their jobs posting zeros in the 7th and 8th, and then handed it over to Kimbrel . Coming of his first blown save in his last 36 attempts he allowed a run to score but got the final out to lock down the 4-2 W and the Happy Flight.

A well played game to finish up the road trip with a 4-5 record. Ross will go tomorrow against the Nationals, with the first pitch being fired at 7:05. Look forward to you joining Uncle Teddy and me for the call on the Mighty 1090.

    Scan,

Been a long suffering Padres fan all my life. I watched this off-season in utter disbelief as we traded our way into a watchable, and possible playoff caliber team. The front office has done much to impress me. Now we need these boys to put it together consistently on the field. I know we owe $$ to Gyorko, but it seems that the team plays better with Spangenburg manning 2B. With Jedd scuffling and with Myers out, we need spark at the top of the order. What is Cory lacking that he isn’t the everyday 2B and lead off hitter that he presents himself as in the 2 hole? I live on the East Coast so I only get to see 2-3 games a week (a working man can only sacrifice so much sleep), so what am I missing?

Had a good time behind the dugout last night. Good to get a split there, Shields was right on!

I wish some of our bullpen pitchers played with “Pelotas” the way Shields did last night. Good gutsy game & great win we needed it.

Nothing wrong with saying the pitcher had balls… it’s in their job description.

Scan, I have to tell you how impressed I am with Spangenburg. I live in Odessa, Texas, where we have the Midland RockHounds baseball team. Naturally, I am a San Antonio Missions fan and, when they’re in town, I am over at the hounds game in my missions gear.

As such, last year I got to watch a lot of Spangenburg. I was impressed with him, BUT… I was worried that, once he got his call up, he might do the old “quick flame out” that happens to so many young guys who finally get their shot.

Instead…. He has clearly made the most of his “shot” and is, in my opinion, showing that he belongs at the MLB level…. He runs hard, plays smart, and never gives up on an offensive or defensive play. As an example, I point to one of his at bats last night, when he hit the ball back to the mound…. I think maybe 8 out of 10 guys would have been out on that play, because, having hit the ball at (and to) the pitcher, they would have assumed “well, I’m gonna be thrown out” and loafed to 1st.

    Not Spangenburg.

Instead, he put the afterburners on, and ended up safe on the play. That’s his character. That’s his style. And that’s why he belongs.
