Padres Place Thatcher on 15-Day DL & Recall Boxberger

Baseball 30 Jul 2012

The Padres announced today that they have placed LHP Joe Thatcher on the 15-Day DL, retroactive to July 26th, with right knee tendinitis.

The knee had been bothering Joe for the past several days.  Buddy and the Padres were hopeful that a few days rest might calm it down, but it was not getting better with rest and treatment and the team could not continue to be short an arm in the bullpen.

Brad Boxberger was recalled from Triple-A Tucson.  The right hander has posted a 2-2 record, 5 saves, and 3.03 ERA in 34 appearances with Tucson, and is making his second stint with the big league club.  In 5 previous outing with the Pads he posted a 1.42 ERA in 6.1 ip.

With the addition of Boxberger the Padres now have all 4 of the players, including Volquez, Alonso, and Grandal, that they received in return for the Mat Latos trade to the Reds.

Hey Bob, this is Yoda777, the retired SEAL from a year ago or so. I like your work on the radio, you are going to go far in that; moreover, I see a potential big future in TV for you ———— you get it. In regards to the Latos trade, I posted the idea of trading Latos in May of 2011 because he was our most valuable trade piece and to transfer the risk of he [Latos] becoming an ace onto some other team. While I was disappointed that the Padres did not draft Grandal when they had the chance, the 4 players we got for Latos are outstanding. I bet we will be able to turn Volquez into a few other prospects as well. In two years, Grandal will be considered among the best all around catchers in Baseball and Alonzo reminds me of Adrian Gonzalez more and more each day. Boxberger was also a fantastic pickup and should be able to take Greggersons spot as the 7 inning man in due time. Now, Chase Headley, I would like to see the Padres sign him long term right now [does not mean we can not trade him in a year or two], unless we can get back two decent pieces [A Sterling Marte or Tyler Skaggs level]. I would like to see Gyroko’s bat established at the MLB level before we leet Headley go. What do you think of this trade idea: Padres give Headley, few B prospects, Padres get Marte, Skaggs, and Bell [from Pittsburgh]; DBacks give Skaggs and Upton, DBacks get Headley, Cole and B prospects; Pittburgh gives Marte, Cole, and Bell, Pittsburgh gets Upton, B prospects.
This would get the Padres an elite level outfield prospect for right field and make Venable and Denorfia our 4th and 5th outfielders.
