Padres Spring Training Report – Mar. 2, 2015

Baseball 02 Mar 2015

“Neither snow nor rain nor heat nor gloom of night stays these couriers from the swift completion of their appointed rounds.” This is the inscription on the front of the James Farley Post Office in New York.  It comes from a quote from the Greek historian Herodotus, referring to the determination and resiliency of the courier service of the ancient Persian Empire.

Taking that same “we will not be denied” esprit de corps of the ancient world, the Padres endured the treacherous elements offered up by mother nature today and…um…yeah…ok, I’m being a little melodramatic here.  But it was raining all morning, and really dang cold out here for being in a desert!

A cold, wet, and blustery day in Peoria.

Good news, was that media photo day went under the roof of the cafeteria to stay dry, so you will get your 3-D representation of Tyson Ross, and Matt Kemp on your video games this summer….phew!

Photo day under the roof…say Padres Fever!

As for the baseball work for the day, the hitters took their swings in the cage, while the pitchers worked under the partially roofed bullpens.  Hitters would take turns standing in the batters box for the visual benefit of seeing the ball come out of the pitchers’ hands, and the pitchers seeing a batter up their and getting their feedback on the effectiveness of their offerings.

No need to worry about the baseballs getting wet, as the Friar hurlers were all throwing with such tremendous velocity that their pitches avoided the rain, and those droplets of water that dared approach one of those fastballs instantaneously evaporated from the heat generated by the air friction…yeah, we do bogus science here at HeyScan.com.

With the rain there was a lot of time spent loitering around the clubhouse waiting to do interviews.  What was cool to notice was the interaction going on throughout the clubhouse.  There’s been some concerns raised about the chemistry of the club with so many new faces.  From what I’ve seen there’s already been some great interaction by new players and holdovers, veterans and rookies, and whatever other perceived divisive factor that might exist. Theres been a lot of fun in there already, and hopefully it stays that way throughout the season.
