Time for Padres’ team nicknames to grow up.

Baseball 27 Jul 2010

Hey Padres fans, isn’t it time to stop using the terms “Little”, “Small”, and “Baby” in nicknames for the Padres? Isn’t it time for this organization to grow up, and sit at the big boys’ table?

These terms such as “Gritty, little Padres”, “Baby Padres”, etc. while intending to be endearing, to me only perpetuate the perception of being a second tier organization not to be taken seriously.

Time to come up with something new that tells the world that Padres players and their fans don’t view themselves as prepubescents that get patted on the head by the rest of the league, before being told to “Go way kid, you’re bothering me.”

Come on, Padre faithful, time to come up with nicknames that portend the brand of baseball you expect from now on out of your team – hard nosed, unrelenting, and unified in purpose to win a championship.

Here’s an idea for a nickname for the San Diego MLB club. Padres. If you leave it up to the fans, we’re likely to be in the World Series and still be on page 2 as the Chargers lose another close game.

They’ll believe in the Chargers year after year.. but they get handed a contender and they refuse to get on board.

.. How about.. San Diego Effin Padres, baby!

“San Diego Effin Padres”…hmmm…has a nice ring to it. I say we start printing the the T-shirts. All those in favor say “Aye”!

    Hey Scan:
When The Dodgers scored their first run, it looked to me that the runner missed 3rd base. Doesn’t a Padre player or coach watch to make sure runners touch the bases while running them? Thanks, Mike Fallbrook

I don’t think Adrian is slumping. He just needs to get his head around the fact that he isn’t our only big bat. I think the new guys, Ludwig and Tejada, who we know are awesome bookends for his talent, have shaken him up a bit. Kinda like the two year old who gets a new brother, the baby is cool but the two year old needs to understand he was first and always will be.

Bob, Stauffer is my pick if Bud needs a plug in starter for the Friars. Your thoughts?…

    A) I agree with Eat2Surf: The Padres. “We don’t need no steenkin’ neekname!” No one else has one, do they?
    2) I think Adrian is doing just fine. Maybe he’s just relaxing a bit from have the “bookends” to support him.
    Just a thought.

Ekison – My choice is Luebke. I think pat of Stauffer’s success has been his working out of pen, not seeing lineups too many times, and letting it all hang out, so to speak, for shorter stint. Keep him where he’s been successful, and let Luebke get his feet wet in September to give a rest to rest of staff.

PadFan – I always like Fightin’ Phils, Big Red Machine, Bronx Bombers, etc., but I am clearly not suggesting a stupid nickname just to have a nickname. In fact my point is better NO nickname than the demeaning ones that suggest Pads are a second tier organization, not quite ready for prime time players, or a bunch of have nots. I think the names like “Gritty LITTLE Padres” and “Baby Padres” and the like are infantilising, in my opinion.
