Answer to our last question:   On May 4, White Sox pitchers failed to record a strike out ending their 402-game streak of at least one whiff per contest.  Who’s pitching staff has the current longest streak of striking out at least one batter in a game?  Answer:  The Chicago Cubs pitching staff as of  Wednesday May 15th, has struck out at least one opposing batter in a record 2,248 consecutive games.  Wow!

Answer to our last question:  Second baseman Skip Schumaker became the eighth position player to pitch for the Dodgers since the team moved to Los Angeles in 1958.  What former Padres position player was one of those 8 to pitch for the Dodgers?  

 ANSWER:  On July 28, 2009 Mark Loretta pitched 1/3 of an inning in a blow our game against the Cardinals.  He hit Matt Holiday with his first pitch, then retired Ryan Ludwick.  It was the second time in his MLB career that Mark had pitched.

Answer to yesterday’s question:  With the Padres Jedd Gyorko off to a good start in pursuit of the N.L. Rookie of the Year Award, it made me wonder which current MLB team has been waiting the longest to have an ROY winner? 

 ANSWER:  The New York Mets’ last ROY winner was Dwight Gooden in 1984, and have not had another one since.  They have been waiting longer than any other team, including the Diamondbacks who have yet to win one but were started in 1998.

ANSWER:  8 is the record, done twice. Nate Colbert Aug. 1, 1972 at Atlanta in game 2 of a double header, and Ken Caminiti against the Rockies on September 19th, 1995.

Answer to yesterday’s question:  What is the Padres team record for most strikeouts by their pitching staff  recorded in a nine inning game? 

ANSWER:  The Pads have twice struck out 18 opponents in a 9-inning game.  The first time was against Atlanta on May 22, 2006, and the second time was at Arizona April 25, 2007.  Jake Peavy started both of those games and both times struck out 16 on his own in 7 innings.

Padres executive chairman Ron Fowler reportedly tole the  U-T San Diego that a “multi-year” deal will be offered to Chase “before midseason”.

Fowler went on to say that it would not be a deal as long as 10 years, but would make Headley the highest paid player in team history, and keep him around for a long time.  ”We’re not going to sit here and do nothing. That’s not in our best interests.” said Fowler.  However he added,  ”it takes two to dance. One thing you can’t do in business is negotiate against yourself. That doesn’t make any sense.”

Time will tell if both sides want to dance together, and the Padres and Chase are a good marriage going forward, or whether Headley ultimately decides it’s in his best interest to pursue other suitors.
