Padres Make 2 More Cuts From Spring Roster

Baseball 28 Mar 2012

The Padres made two more moves this morning and reduced their spring training roster to 38 players.

OPTIONED:

  • Yasmani Grandal – C:  The young switch hitting catcher showed very well this spring hitting .353, with 2 HR’s, and 11 RBI.  Skipper Buddy Black said Yasmani had a good camp and that the defensive work he did with Terry Kennedy, Brad Ausmus, John Gibbons, and Justin Hatcher was very beneficial to his defensive development.  He showed prodigious power at times, and all indications are that he is well on his way to becoming a solid MLB catcher entering only his second full year of professional ball.
REASSIGNED:
  • Alex Hinshaw – LHP:  The former Giants reliever had some very solid outings this spring, and showed glimpses of the dominant left hander that he can be with his 93-94 MPH fastball.  He worked with Darren Balsley on some mechanical changes to help him be more consistent in throwing strikes, and overall those changes have already proved helpful.  The key for Alex will be to continue to work on his consistency from outing to outing, so that he can be called upon with more confidence knowing that the overpowering, strike throwing Hinshaw will come in and get the job done night in and night out.
It’s never fun walking into the clubhouse and seeing guys packing their stuff and shaking hands goodbye, but it’s part of the game.
The spring training roster roster now consists of:
  • Pitchers – 17 (14 RHP, 3 LHP)
  • Catchers – 3
  • Infielders – 11
  • Outfielders – 7
Obviously more cuts will have to be made, and the further into spring you go the tougher some of those decisions can be.  It is possible that the Padres will not make any more announced cuts until after their final exhibition games against the Royals.  Stay tuned….
