Padres Make Final Moves And Announce Opening Day Roster

Buddy Black and his staff have made their decisions, and announced tonight some roster moves and their final opening day roster.

DISABLED LIST:

Carlos Quentin – OF: As expected Quenitn was officially placed on the 15-day DL as he recovers from the knee surgery he had done to clean up the meniscus of his right knee. MLB rules allow for spring training injuries to be retroactive to a maximum 5 days prior to the first game of the season, but it was not indicated in the Padres release that this retroactive provision was exercised.
Mark Kotsay – OF: Unexpected was the injury to mark Kotsay’s right calf in a split squad night game a few days ago. The Pads were holding out hope that they would not have to DL him to start the season, but with the calf still sore he will start on the 15-Day DL retroactive to April 1st.

CONTRACT PURCHASED:

Jeremy Hermida – OF: With Kotsay going on the DL, that opened up a need for a left hand hitting outfielder to come off the bench. Hitting .313, with 4 HR’s and 9 RBI Hermida earned that chance to fill that hole. He may see time in left field platooning with Jesus Guzman bridging the gap until Quentin returns.

OPTIONED:

Brad Brach – RHP: Despite a great spring posting a 1.69 ERA over 12 outings, Brad will start the season in AAA Tucson likely as their closer. This means as anticipated Micah Owings makes the team as the long relief/swing man.
Everth Cabrera – INF/OF: Andy Parrino wins the battle for the last utility spot off the bench. Maybe it was because his .212 spring batting average edged out Cabrera’s .210. Both players played every infield position, and some out field as well. Parrino also hit 5 HR’s to Everth’s 1. Both played well in the field, but Cabrera will start the season in AAA Tucson, and continue to hone his tools that still leave many believing he can be an everyday MLB player.
