Padres Reportedly Preparing Offer To Headley

headley, chaseThe Padres appear to be poised to offer Chase Headley a multi-year contract that would make him the highest paid player in team history.

Padres executive chairman Ron Fowler reportedly tole the  U-T San Diego that a “multi-year” deal will be offered to Chase “before midseason”.

Fowler went on to say that it would not be a deal as long as 10 years, but would make Headley the highest paid player in team history, and keep him around for a long time.  “We’re not going to sit here and do nothing. That’s not in our best interests.” said Fowler.  However he added,  “it takes two to dance. One thing you can’t do in business is negotiate against yourself. That doesn’t make any sense.”

Time will tell if both sides want to dance together, and the Padres and Chase are a good marriage going forward, or whether Headley ultimately decides it’s in his best interest to pursue other suitors.

Everyone in SD wants CH to remain a Pad. But what will the ownership group expect in return or the SD discount? We have not seen them enter the game much less show their cards. This young, golden glove, switch hitting, clutch, power 3rd baseman is a rare gem no doubt. Vamos a ver. Hoov

It would definitely be a fresh approach by the Pads. A welcome one at that! Let’s quit being the Major Leagues’s farm team.

We have to keep Chase. We can’t keep putting our star players on trade threats, it takes away their focus and distracts their performance, we have done it so many times

Great minds think alike… My guess is he doesn’t accept the offer (I hope I am wrong). He’s a country boy, SD isn’t really his style *SPIT*

So what? What’s going to stop the Padres to offer him to the Yankees, Red Sox, or Dodgers in the future when another fire sale comes? Long-term deals mean nothing anymore in Padreland.

Relax. He finally put together a break out season last year. Lets not pretend like he’s the next Chipper Jones. Not to mention he’s turning 29 in a week or so, an 8 year deal would be ridiculous. I think 5yr/80-85 mil would suffice.

It will be a 4-5 year deal worth about $15 per…

Just do it already! We need Chase to be our anchor at 3B!

If they offer him 120 million over 8 years, Chase should definitely accept. 105 mill over 7 years would be much better for the club, and it would be awesome for Chase to accept an offer like that. If the Pads offer him anything under 100 million, this press release is a joke (as well as an offer like that), and he’ll be dealt. My two cents. And I want him to stay a Padre.

They already offered him a contract during the off-season, he didn’t accept. This new offer better be higher than the last. Sounds like the all-mighty Fowler is preparing for Chase to decline again.

makes sense for the Padres…let’s see if the deal makes any sense for Chase

@daniel Balcombe your on point bro. I feel the same way you do. They have to offer him at least 85million 6 years at 14 million a year any less would be an insult & Chase should ask for a trade. I do hope they keep him tho.

Unless the team payroll goes up significantly, how are the Padres going to be able to afford Headley? I thought they weren’t into long term deals? I mean look at what happened with Adrian Gonzalez. I have a feeling that the offer is going to be fairly low for Headley, because there is no way they can offer him $15 mil a year if the team payroll is only $60 mil or whatever it is.

About time! Hopefully it’s a fair offer!

I do not like the tone of this article at all. This is the same type of cheapskate lingo that has marked previous ownership groups. It’s propaganda so that when Headley balks at taking the “San Diego discount” he ends up looking like the bad guy. No, no, no, that is not an acceptable scenario Mr. Fowler.

It’s difficult to find a direct comparison to other third basemen at his age with his numbers but when you review the contracts of Ryan Zimmerman, David Wright and Evan Longoria you get a pretty good indication of how Chase’s contract offer should look.

Anything less than 6 years and 90 million is not a fair offer. Chase should wisely reject any such offer. The only incentive that Chase has it taking an offer is the possibility of a career ending injury. All he would need to do is stay healthy for this and next season and he is virtually guaranteed to get a minimum of $120 million (Probably from the Phillies who are on the brink of signing a massive cable deal and don’t have a decent third baseman).

The burden of proof that this team is willing to invest in building a championship caliber team rest squarely on the owners. Chase owes this organization nothing. He ought to get what is best for him and his family. The O’Malley/Fowler conglomerate on the other hand owes US, the fans, everything. Without us there is no team, no money, no ballpark, no TV deal, etc. And we need to make it clear that they burden is on them to assemble a team that will compete for a title regardless of what they say they can or can’t afford.

This feels like the PR foundation for trading him and if that is what happens there ought to be a nasty backlash.

I sure hope this comment is read by lots of folks and that we all make it very clear to the Padres owners that if that’s the game that they are going to try to pull over on us fans, we simply aren’t going to put up with it.

It’s about time. The Padres need those franchise players to build their fan base. Chase is the obvious first place to start, but they need keep a few more of the current roster to build upon. Hopefully the new owners will get away from the Padres historical lack of commitment to players. It ultimately makes fans reluctant to commit to the team.

I hope it’s a deal he can accept and that will keep him in San Diego! Remember: It takes two to tango! I hope he doesn’t look for better offers elsewhere. He should know by now that there’s no better fans or place to live and play than San Diego!
