Thank You Padres Fans!

Thank You Padres Fans!

Padres Faithful,

For the past 12 years I have been blessed to be a part of the Padres broadcast coverage.  However, as you may have heard yesterday in a press release from the organization, as this season ends so possibly will the string of summers that we’ve shared together.

Whether it’s been the pre and post game shows on television and radio, or the in-game broadcasts as I’ve done in recent years, it has always been a humble and joyful honor to be invited into your living rooms, cars, work places, headphones, and everywhere else we watch or listen to Padres baseball together.

It’s been an incredible journey sharing with you all the highs and lows that each season has to offer, as well as those that this organization and you, its fan base, have endured. From day one I have tried to share my passion for the game in an honest, informative, and fun way. While I would never expect everyone to like my style, I do at least hope that my passion for the game, and respect for all of you as fans came through the airwaves each night.

I look forward to my next adventure and staying involved with Major League Baseball, hopefully here in San Diego so that we can continue our shared quest to bring an MLB championship trophy to our community.

Whether this is simply a so long until next spring,  or a longer good bye until our paths cross again I would like to extend some sincere Thank-You’s…

  • To the Padres organization for having given me this opportunity, and for their support up to this point in my efforts to be positive yet honest in my broadcasting.
  • To all of my broadcast partners and producers over the years, especially most recently the inimitable “Uncle Teddy” Ted Leitner and the esteemed Dave Marcus. Thank you from the bottom of my heart for making everyday at the ballpark and in the booth a fun adventure as we created some of the best broadcasts in MLB.
  • To the players my utmost respect for bringing it on the field each and every night, and appreciation for your cooperation with the pesky daily interviews.
  • To the coaches and baseball operations department, very few will ever fully understand nor appreciate what you give of yourselves to try to bring championship baseball to San Diego. Thank you for your sacrifices, and don’t give up the good fight.
  • To all the hard working behind the scenes employees of the organization and stadium operations who bust their tails everyday to bring Padres baseball to life in our community my sincerest thank you for all of your unsung efforts!
  • To my family thank you for all of your support in allowing this big kid to continue to pursue his dream of being a part of the game he loves.
  • To the fans of San Diego thank you for your support, for holding my feet to the fire, for teaching me as much if not more than what I hope to have shared with you, and for loving the game of baseball. If it weren’t for you MLB in San Diego would not exist. No one deserves a championship more than you!

Since yesterday’s announcement the outpouring of support you’ve shown through your Tweets, emails, texts, Facebook posts, and hand shakes and hugs at the ball park have been overwhelming.  I can’t begin tell you how appreciative and humbled I am for your kindness.  Although I am unable to reply to all of your messages and comments individually please know that each and every one is deeply appreciated. Thank you!!!

Until next time my friends…keep the faith!

With sincerest respect and appreciation,

    Hey, Scan!
This business of baseball can break your heart, and I’m very saddened to learn that you’re leaving the Padres.
I met you this past season when you spoke at a Madres luncheon. THE MADRES LOVE YOU! You’re an excellent, entertaining speaker.
Over the years I would send questions to you for your “Hey, Scan” forum on Channel 4, and you never once failed to answer them, whether on the air or by personal e-mail reply. That meant a lot to me. You’re an excellent, caring communicator.
Our Padres baseball community was better for your insight, your knowledge, your always-well-prepared commentary. You’re an excellent, expert broadcaster.
We’ll miss you. Fare thee well!

    Scan,
Thank you so much for the time and effort you put into each broadcast! It really showed. It was a privilege to listen to your perspective and insight on the game of baseball. As a fan, you were and are one of my favorites. You sympathized with us long suffering fans and understood how much a championship would mean to this fan base. Best of luck on your next endeavors! I enjoyed those post game shows and your broadcasts with Leitner. Your the best!

    Scan,

You’re a terrific broadcaster, and I want to thank you for the years you’ve been on the air here in San Diego. I don’t understand this move, but I do know this: something good awaits you in the future because you’re too smart and too talented not to have more opportunities come your way.

Thanks for giving us unprecedented access to the broadcast booth and for sharing your takes throughout the past few seasons. I’ve been listening to you since you hit the airwaves on 1090 and have been impressed with your professionalism and insight. I am sure you will land on your feet doing what you enjoy. Take care and God bless.

i was able to meet you and Coach Kentera one evening after a game. You were very gracious and I appreciated your welcoming attitude. I think that always came through on your broadcasts. As a lifelong Friars fan I can say that perhaps the bright side is you don’t have to watch all these games anymore. Let’s face it, it can be painful.

Scan, you will be missed. Sometimes you take people for granted and expect that they will always be there. You were a true professional!

Your comments reveal what I have always felt about you, that you are a genuinely nice and thoughtful person. You have spent these years teaching us a lot about baseball, and now you are teaching us the virtues of taking the high road. Being a baseball radio announcer is a privilege because you are welcomed into our cars and homes. You never once made me wish I hadn’t invited you in. And I can’t say that about most announcers I have heard. I wish you all he very best wherever you end up. You’re a class act.

I remember the first time I ever met was was in Peoria for spring training. My dad walked up to you first and introduced himself. Dad waved me over and I walked up shy. I thought I would be nervous but after all you made me feel more and more comfortable as we talked. We took a picture in the sunset which I still treasure today. You lit up the game with stories of your playing days. Love always scan.

    Hey Scan,

I am very sorry to hear that you are leaving and I hope that you land in some capacity in San Diego. I thought you were a great complement to Uncle Teddie. I just enjoyed your analysis of the pitchers and even the hitters. A class guy and no one was more dedicated or prepared!!!

Have you considered a coach or managerial path? I think you would do well for any organization!

Will miss your great commentary. Don’t know what the Padres are thinking, but this ranks with their bonehead “Petco Park announcer” disaster. Would listen to you anytime over Sweeney or Mud. Will miss your work with Ted immensely, as I only have radio to listen to for the games. If Padres management is watching – this move stinks. Wish you all the best! Padre fan since Westgate Park.

Mr. Scanlan, I’m going to miss hearing your voice during the baseball season. You have so much baseball knowledge and experience to bring to the table. I prefer to listen to you over Ted Leitner. At times, Ted seems to totally ignore/disregard what you say. For example, you’ll say something and Ted doesn’t even acknowledge your comment. You’re a consummate professional, you’ve never given the impression that his arrogance bothers you. Good luck in your future and may God bless you and your family always.

Met you last holiday season at Fashion Valley. You were kind enough to shake my hand and chat. I actually pleeded with you to not run off to ESPN on us San Diegans. I’m still convinced there are bigger things for you in the broadcast world. Look forward to following your career.

Scan-Count me as another one of your legion of fans that was shocked to hear of your dismissal. You’re excellent at your craft. I have NO DOUBTS that you’ll land on your feet profesdionally in short order.
I’ll miss your keen insights to the game many of us played and enjoy. Your background allows you a unique perspective, and your honed skill allows you to share the nuances eloquently.
Thanks for many enjoyable broadcasts and your updates posted on BobScanlan.com.
Blessings to you and your family

Scan, when I read the news last night, I became really upset. I have been totally blind since birth, and am a huge baseball fanatic. My Father in his younger days was quite a good baseball player to the point where he was professionally scouted, but just never made it to the show. when I was a little boy, we used to enjoy baseball games together. He would do so much more than just tell me what was happening in the game. He would explain the little subtleties within the game. he really brought alive for me the mental chess match happening on the field which so many casual baseball observers dismiss as non action.

That is what I loved about your color commentary during the radio broadcasts — your explanations of those small, but important details that most other commentators would miss. I don’t know what problem the powers that be had with your broadcasting style, but I at least want you to know that when you spoke, I listened…I mean really listened! Thank you for bringing the game within the game to life for me the way my Father used to. You will be missed.

I wish you all the best and this is a real blow to an already disappointing season end.
