Maybin & Padres Agree To 5 Year Extension

Baseball 03 Mar 2012

Cameron Maybin just spoke to the media about his new 5 year guaranteed contract extension, and is “Excited. It’s the opportunity I’ve been wiring for, I’m ecstatic!”

According to Corey Brock of the UT, the breakdown is as follows:

  • $500,000 signing bonus
  • 2012 – $500,000
  • 2013 – $3M
  • 2014 – $5M
  • 2015 – $7M
  • 2016 – $8M
  • 2017 – club option at $9M, with $1M buyout.
Maybin was given a chance to play everyday for the first time last season, and showed that he was ready for the assignment as he hit .264, with 40 stolen bases, and 81 runs scored.  But more important than the numbers was the improvement that he continued to show throughout the seasons in every aspect of his game.  He admittedly started the season with a little bit of apprehension about whether or not the CF job was really his or not, but by the All-Star break realized the “I was the guy”, and started to relax.

By August the Padres had apparently seen the transformation that Cam was feeling as they approached his representatives with the idea of crafting an extension, and although a no trade clause was refused by the club, they clearly saw the potential still within.  Having been made promises by organizations in the past about their commitment to him that had fallen through, he told himself ” I’ll believe it when I see it,” and, “Went about it as though it wouldn’t happen.”  Well, it happened and according to Maybin he would love to spend the rest of his career in San Diego patrolling PETCO’s spacious centerfield.

Congratulations to Cameron Maybin on the great contract that gives him another show of confidence from the organization, and financial stability for his family, and to the Padres for locking up a fine young talent with his best years still ahead of him.  A good move for all, and hopefully the sign of what is to come with the rest of the young talent the Padres have recently been bringing into the system.
