Scripps Dunk-A-Thon Raises $50,000!

Baseball 04 Feb 2013

CONGRATULATIONS to Susan Taylor and Scripps Health for reaching their goal of $50,000 today in the grand finale of  The Beat Goes On Social Media Fundraiser & Dunk-A Thon!

Not only did the financial goal get reached, but the fun level reached expectations as well with lots of dunk tank victims.  Highlight’s included:

  • A water spigot exploding just minutes after we started the event, creating a 10 foot geyser that immediately soaked a bank of computers, and network cameras recording the events.  One of the first to take action and pounce on the gusher was none other than Scripps Health President and CEO Chris Van Gorder.  Gotta love seeing the big boss diving head first into the mess to save the day – leadership at it’s finest and rawest display.  Eventually Old Faithful was subdued with a chair back and a linebacker sized Scripps employee until the main line could be shut down.
  • Scripps employees dressed in red shirts circling the fountain at Scripps Memorial hospital to form a heart in show of support for the nationally recognized heart program at scripps.
  • The afore mentioned Chris Van Gorder being dunked by gutsy Scripps employees who were given no assurance that their jobs would be saved should they dunk their boss.  Chris went under several times, and as of last report no pink slips have been issued.
  • Scripps Memorial Chief Executive Gary Fybel also getting dunked by his constituents, and then by his wife!
  • A bidder offering a $500 donation only if Trevor Hoffman could hit the target and dunk NBC7 Sport Director Jim Laslavic on one throw. The pressure was on the future Hall of Famer, and as he did 602 times during his career he came through in the clutch and made his pitch, sending Laz into the icy cold water on one throw and securing the $500 for Scripps Heart Care.
  • Watching Trevor come through in the clutch on multiple challenges to dunk someone on one pitch, bringing in close to $1000 under pressure.
  • Seeing Susan Taylor dunked in the tank wearing her red velvet heart costume.  She was also dunked by her husband, and she in turn got revenge dunking him in his civilian clothes.
  • Watching Trevor, who pitched collegiately at UofA, get dunked for $5000 by an ASU Sun Devil graduate with a grudge against the former Wildcat.
  • My getting dunked in my dress clothes by Laslavic, who took three throws but nailed it on the last try (SEE  VIDEO HERE).

A great time was had by all, and a nice chunk of money was raised to continue to support the state of the art, and nationally recognized heart care that Scripps provides to over 55,000 San Diego patients every year.

Thank you to everyone who contributed to the cause, and to Susan Taylor and the leadership, staff, and volunteers at Scripps who made the event come to life to save lives.

The beat goes on!
