Sale Of Padres Approved By MLB Owners

Baseball 16 Aug 2012

The Padres released a statement today announcing that Major League Baseball has approved the sale of the San Diego Padres from John Moores to the group led by the Seidler/O’Malley families and Ron Fowler who will serve as the control person for the group.

The approval took place during quarterly MLB ownership meetings in Denver.  The announcement of the approval was announced by Commissioner Allen H. (Bud) Selig.

The vote that took place almost immediately after the meeting began was reportedly unanimous, and followed by a standing ovation by the MLB owners as Fowler and several members of the O’Malley family were ushered into the hall.

“We are grateful to have completed a significant step in the sale process,” Mr. Fowler said following the vote today in Denver. “On behalf of the Seidler and O’Malley families, I would like to thank the Commissioner and MLB owners for their vote of trust.  We want to thank San Diego fans for their patience and support as we await the final closing.”

“We are excited to be one step closer to continuing our families’ deep baseball tradition, and especially excited to be doing it in San Diego,” Peter Seidler said.  “We feel a sincere responsibility to support the franchise in a manner that will make the Padres’ loyal fans proud of our organization and, most importantly, proud of the ball club on the field.”

The final closing of the sale is expected to occur on or before August 31, 2012, and no further statements will be made until that time.

This is an exciting next step in the acquisition of the Padres by a storied baseball family in the O’Malleys and Seidlers, successful businessman Ron Fowler, and local golf legend Phil Mickelson.  I’m looking forward to the final consummation of the sale so that we can all celebrate the continued forward movement of the Padres organization.
